The Melbournaires Barbershop Chorus, Inc. was formed in May 1991. The Melbournaires Harmony Chorus, the club's largest chorus, is one of the best competing choruses in Australia and in the Pan Pacific Region. The Melbournaires have been ranked amongst the top choruses nationally since its first competition in 1995 and in 2005 became the top medium sized men's barbershop harmony chorus in Australia.
The chorus comprises about 50 men, singing 4-part barbershop harmony music performing regularly through the Melbourne Metropolitan Region. The chorus is a member of the BHA (Barbershop Harmony Australia) and is a non-profit organisation.
The chorus is a professional, quality singing organisation comprising amateur performers, generally gathering together to rehearse just once per week. We would love to hear from you if you can hold a tune, love close harmonies and would like to become part of a group. Rehearsals are held every Monday night and visitors are welcome.
We sing the popular songs from past years in the barbershop harmony style - the barbershop lead (tenor) voice singing the melody, the barbershop tenor (counter-tenor) harmonising above the lead, the bass singing the lowest notes and the barbershop baritone finding a fourth harmony note sometimes above and sometimes below the melody line.
Within the chorus there are several quartets. The quartets have an expanded repertoire made up of the chorus repertoire and songs they have selected themselves.
